The center of Mala Strana is dominated by magnificent baroque facades of numerous palaces. Towering over these buildings is the 80-meter cupola of St. Nicholas Church which is where the world premier of Mozart's Requiem was performed. Above in the Hradshin district is probably the most famous place of pilgrimage in the city for baroque architecture, namely the Loreto Chapel. Since the foundation was layed in 1626 it was necessary to regularly expand the liturgy and adjoining rooms because of the afflux in visitors to this site. Not far is the Strahov Monastery, which has one of the most significant libraries of old Europe with unique and rare documents from medieval and early modern times.
